The Sun

The Sun is a great symbol of the Great Spirit, God, because it is the light that brightens the whole world and makes things live and grow. It is the main symbol of the Sundance, and all during the dance, the dancers follow its path in the sky, facing it as it goes from east to west. It’s shape is like the circle, which has neither beginning nor end. It rises and sets day after day, always the same.

This Prayer to the Great Spirit is inspired by the Sun.

“Father, Great Spirit, You are the center

of our lives, and we look to you for all that

we need to stay alive. You are like to sun to us.

When you shine on us and bless us, we are happy.

When you hide your face, we are helpless without you.

Bless us and keep us, and all people will honor you.”
