REBURIAL OF ANCESTRAL BONES

Return to: Fr Stan's Notes

On February 17, 2000, the Yankton Sioux Tribe reburied ancestral bones that had been uncovered by Missouri River water impounded behind the Gavins Point Dam. The site was at the cemetery of the old Episcopal Church of White Swan. Teresa Lehto, spokesperson for the Tribe, said that the Corps of Engineers knew of the bones as early as 1996 and are in violation of the Historic Preservation Act and other Gederal lawasthat protect Native gravesites. The Yankton Tribal Offices are at Marty, South Dakota, 57351.
