Saturday Evening Prayer
Lent

(Make the sign of the cross, saying:)

God, come to my assistance,
Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen

ANT: Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John,
and led them up a high mountain.
There he was transfigured before them.

Psalm 118-M (119-M)
Lord, how I love your law!
It is ever in my mind.
Your command makes me wiser than my foes;
for it is mine for ever.

I have more insight than all who teach me
for I ponder your will.
I have more understanding than the old
for I keep your precepts.

I turn my feet from evil paths to obey your word.
I have not turned from your decrees;
you yourself have taught me.

Your promise is sweeter to my taste
than honey in the mouth.
I gain understanding from your precepts
and so I hate false ways.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen

ANT: Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John,
and led them up a high mountain.
There he was transfigured before them.

[Pause and reflect on the previous psalm.]

ANT: Moses and Elijah were speaking to him
about the death he would endure in Jerusalem.

Canticle 22 (Philippians 2:6-11)
Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.
He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant,
being born in the likeness of men.

And being found in human form,
he humbled himself and became obedient unto death,
even death upon a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him,
and bestowed on him the name that is above every other name.

That at the name of Jesus every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth.
And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen

ANT: Moses and Elijah were speaking to him
about the death he would endure in Jerusalem.

[Pause and reflect on the previous psalm.]

READING (2 Corinthians 6:1-4)
We beg you not to receive the grace of God in vain.
For he says, "In an acceptable time I have heard you;
on a day of salvation I have helped you."
Now is the acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!
We avoid giving anyone offense, so that our ministry may not be blamed.
On the contrary, in all that we do we strive
to present ourselves as ministers of God.

[Reflect on the Reading, applying it to your life today.]

ANT: A voice spoke from the cloud:
This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.

CANTICLE OF MARY (Lk 1:46-55)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed;
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen

ANT: A voice spoke from the cloud:
This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.

INTERCESSIONS
Lord our God, you have concern for us all;
save the people you have redeemed.

Pour your love into the hearts of all who share the one bread of life
that they may grow in unity in the body of your Son.

Grant that all may do penance and find forgiveness
and so share in the fruits of Christ's redeeming death.

May those who have died in your peace give you everlasting glory in heaven
where we, too, hope to praise you for ever.

[Pray for your special intentions.]

OUR FATHER
And now we pray to God the Father in the words that Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen

PRAYER
God our Father, help us to hear your Son.
Enlighten us with your word,
that we may find the way to your glory.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen

BLESSING
May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen
