MISSION
|
In the year 1962 the Benedictines of Blue Cloud
Abbey in Marvin, South Dakota were invited to found a mission in
Coban, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, In 1964 Frs. Wilfrid and Xavier
arrived. The Priory "La Resurreccion" was blessed in 1970.
Many monks of Blue Cloud have come to learn Spanish and Qeqchi and
work in the Parish. At this moment there are three monks of Blue
Cloud and three members of Central America in solemn vows, six more
in temporal vows and three novices. The community has founded
a Savings and Credit Cooperative, a cultural radio-Radio Tezulutlan
on AM 3.845 FM 103.5. The Centro San Benito was built to train
catechists. These three projects are diocesan. The work of the
Priory is pastoral. The monks take care of a large urban parish and
a rural parish that has 55 chapels. There is a large group of
catechists who prepare the people for the sacraments and a team of
ministers of communion which makes this work possible. In the
city of Coban there is a "posada" that can accommodate 100
campesinos for the night. There is a clinic for the poor and
workers. We help poor students who cannot pay their studies.
TELEVERAPAZ is a project to prepare video cassettes which the parish
uses and loans to other parishes. With the help of prayers of
many friends and their donations, we continue to take care of these
two parishes and build the Priorato La Resurrecion.
