NATIVE AMERICAN CENSUS |
Return to: Fr Stan's Notes |
| There are no certain
census figures for Native Peoples in the fifty States. Tribal People are probably
under-counted. The best
estimate from the 1980 census is 1,468,523. In the 1990 census the
number grew to 2,065,014, an increase of approximately 30%.
The increase cannot be based on the birth rate. Instead, there has been a grow-ing awareness among the youth that their Native Indian heritage must be re-claimed. Tribal Leaders are hoping that their members have fully responded to the 2000 census. Many Indian people had been lured to urban centers. Representative cities are (1990 count) Los Angeles 87,487; Tulsa 48,196; New York 46,181; Oklahoma City 45,270; San Francisco 40,847; Phoenix 38,017; Seattle-Tacoma 32,017; Minneapolis 23,596; Tucson 20,330; San Diego 20,066. Home, however, after some work-time and some experience in the city, is still the Reservation. For your State figures, as accurate as I can get them, write to indian@bluecloud.org |
