Canticle 21(Ephesians 1:31)
Blest be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the
heavenly places.
He chose us in him before the
foundation of the world,
that we should be holy and blameless
before him.
He destined us in love to be his sons
through Jesus Christ,
according to the purpose of his will,
to the praise of his glorious grace
which he freely gave us in the
beloved.
In him we have redemption through his
blood,
the forgiveness of our trespasses,
according to the riches of his grace,
which he lavished upon us.
He has made known to us in all wisdom
and insight
the mystery of his will,
according to his purpose that he set
forth in Christ,
His purpose he set forth in Christ as
a plan
for the fullness of time,
to unite all things in him,
things in heaven and things on earth.
Canticle 22 (Philippians 2:611)
Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not count equality with God
a thing to be grasped.
He emptied himself, taking the form
of a servant,
being born in the likeness of men.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself and became
obedient unto death,
even death upon a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him,
and bestowed on him the name
that is above every other name.
That at the name of Jesus every knee
should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the
earth.
And every tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Canticle 23 (Colossians 1:1220)
Let us give thanks to the Father,
who has qualified us to share in the
inheritance
of the saints in light.
He has delivered us from the dominion
of darkness
and transferred us to the kingdom
of his beloved Son,
in whom we have redemption, the
forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn of all creation,
for in him all things were created,
in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible.
All things were created through him
and for him.
He is before all things,
and in him all things hold together.
He is the head of the body, the
Church;
he is the beginning, the firstborn
from the dead,
that in everything he might be
preeminent.
For in him all the fullness of God
was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile to
himself all things,
whether on earth or in heaven,
making peace by the blood of his
cross.
Canticle 24 (1 Timothy 2:56; 3:6;
6:1516)
There is only one God and one
mediator between
God and mortals,
himself a man, Christ Jesus,
who sacrificed himself as ransom for
them all.
He was made visible in the flesh,
attested by the Spirit, seen by
angels,
proclaimed to the pagans, believed in
by the world,
taken up in glory.
In due time, he will be revealed by
God,
the blessed and only Ruler of all,
the King of kings and Lord of lords,
who alone is immortal,
who dwells in unapproachable light,
whom no one has seen and cannot see.
To him be honor and everlasting
power.
Canticle 25 (Titus 3:47)
When the kindness and generous love
of God our Savior appeared,
it was not because of any righteous
deeds
we had done,
but because of his mercy.
He saved us through the cleansing
water of rebirth,
and by new life in the Holy Spirit.
This Spirit he lavished upon us
through Jesus Christ, our Savior,
that we might be justified by his
grace,
and become heirs in hope of
everlasting life.
Canticle 26 (1 Peter 2:2125)
Christ suffered for you, leaving you
an example
that you should follow in his steps.
He committed no sin;
on his lips was found no guile.
When he was reviled, he did not
revile in return.
When he suffered, he did not
threaten,
but he trusted in him who judges
justly.
He himself bore our sins in his body
on the cross,
that we might die to sin and live to
righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed.
For you were like sheep straying,
but now you have returned to the
Shepherd and
Guardian of your souls.
Canticle 27 (Revelation 4:11 &
5:11)
Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power.
For you created all things,
and by your will they existed and
were created.
Worthy are you, O Lord,
to take the scroll and to open its
seals.
For you were slain and by your blood
you ransomed
men for God
from every tribe and tongue and
people and nation.
You have made us a kingdom and
priests to our God,
and we shall reign on earth.
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth,
and wisdom and might and honor and
glory
and blessing!
Canticle 28 (Revelation 11 and 12)
We give you thanks, Lord God
Almighty,
who are and who were,
that you have taken your great power
and begun to reign.
The nations raged, but your wrath
came
and the time for the dead to be
judged,
for rewarding your servants, the
prophets and saints,
and those who fear your name, both
small and great.
Now the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Christ have
come,
for the accuser of our brethren has
been thrown down,
who accuses them day and night before
our God.
And they have conquered him by the
blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony,
for they loved not their lives even
unto death.
Rejoice then, O heaven
and you that dwell therein!
Canticle 29 (Revelation 19)
Salvation and glory and power belong
to our God.
All his judgments are true and just.
Praise our God, all you his servants,
you who fear him, small and great.
The Lord our God, the Almighty,
reigns.
Let us rejoice and give him the
glory.
The marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
It was granted her to be clothed
with linen bright and pure.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end, amen.
Canticle 30 (Exodus 15)
I will sing to the Lord, glorious his
triumph!
Horse and rider he has thrown into
the sea!
The Lord is my strength, my song, my
salvation.
This is my God, and I extol him.
He is my father's God, and I give him
praise.
The Lord is a warrior, the Lord is
his name.
The chariots of Pharaoh he hurled
into the sea.
The flower of his army is drowned in
the sea.
The enemy said "I will pursue
and overtake them;
I will divide the plunder, I shall
have my will.
I will draw my sword and my hand
shall destroy them."
You blew with your breath and the sea
closed
over them.
They went down like lead into the
mighty waters.
Who is like you among the gods, O
Lord,
who is like you so glorious in
holiness,
spreading fear through your deeds,
you who
do marvels?
You stretched forth your hand, the
earth
engulfed them.
Your love has guided the people you
redeemed;
your power has led them to your holy
dwelling.
Canticle 31 (Sirach 36:1017)
Gather all the tribes of Jacob,
that they may inherit the land as of
old.
Show mercy to the people called by
your name;
Israel, whom you named your
firstborn.
Take pity on your holy city,
Jerusalem, your dwelling place.
Fill Zion with your majesty,
your temple with your glory.
Give evidence of your deeds of old;
fulfill the prophecies spoken in your
name.
Reward those who have hoped in you,
and let your prophets be proved true.
Hear the prayers of your servants,
for you are ever gracious to your
people.
Thus it will be known to the very
ends of the earth
that you are the eternal God.
Canticle 32 (Isaiah 2)
It will come to pass in the latter
days
that the mountain of the Lord's house
will be
established as the highest of the
mountains;
it will be raised above the hills;
and all the nations will flow to it.
And many peoples will come and say:
"Come, let us go up to the
mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways and
that we may walk
in his paths."
For out of Zion will go forth the
law,
and the word of the Lord from
Jerusalem.
He will judge between the nations
and will decide for many peoples;
and they will beat their swords into
plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not lift up sword against
nation,
neither will they learn war anymore.
O house of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the Lord!
Canticle 33 (Isaiah 26)
On that day this song will be sung in
the land of Judah:
We have a strong city;
to guard us he has set wall and
rampart a-bout us.
Open the gates!
Let the upright nation come in,
she the faithful one, whose mind is
steadfast,
who keeps the peace, because she
trusts in you.
Trust in the Lord for ever,
for the Lord is the everlasting Rock.
The path of the upright man is
straight;
you smooth the way of the upright.
Following the path of your judgments,
we hoped in you, O Lord.
Your name, your memory are all my
soul desires.
At night my soul longs for you,
and my spirit seeks for you.
When your judgments appear on earth,
the world's inhabitants learn
justice.
Lord, you are giving us peace,
since you treat us as our deeds
deserve.
Canticle 34 (Isaiah 61)
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
my soul will exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the
garments of salvation.
He has covered me with the robe of
righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a
garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with
jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its
shoots,
and as the garden causes the seed to
spring up,
so the Lord God will cause integrity
and praise
to spring forth before all the
nations.
For Zion's sake I will not keep
silent,
and for Jerusalem's sake I will not
rest,
until her vindication goes forth as
brightness
and her salvation as a burning torch.
The nations will see your
vindication,
and all the kings your glory;
and you will be called by a new name,
which the mouth of the Lord will
give.
You will be a crown of beauty in the
hand of the Lord,
and a royal diadem in the hand of
your God.
You will no more be termed
"Forsaken,"
and your land will no more be termed
"Desolate;"
but you will be called
"My-delight-in-her,"
and your land "Married."
For the Lord takes his delight in
you,
and your land will have its wedding.
For as a young man marries a virgin,
so shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over
the bride,
so will your God rejoice over you.
Canticle 36 (Isaiah 61:16)
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon
me,
because the Lord has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring glad tidings
to the lowly,
to heal the brokenhearted.
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
and release to all the prisoners.
To announce a year of favor from the
Lord,
a day of vindication by our God.
To place on those who mourn in Zion
a crown instead of ashes,
to give them oil of gladness in place
of mourning,
a glorious mantle instead of a
listless spirit.
They will be called the oaks of
justice,
planted by the Lord to show his
glory.
They will rebuild the ancient ruins,
the former wastes they will raise up,
and restore the ruined cities,
desolate now for generations.
Strangers will stand ready to pasture
your flocks;
foreigners will till your soil and
tend your vines.
You yourselves will be the priests of
the Lord;
ministers of our God you will be
called.
You shall eat the wealth of the
nations,
and boast of riches from them.
Canticle 37 (1 Peter 1:37)
Blest be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus
Christ,
who in his great mercy has given us a
new birth,
a birth in living hope because of the
resurrection of
Jesus Christ from the dead;
a birth to an inheritance that cannot
perish or fade
away or be defiled.
It is an inheritance kept in heaven
for you
who are protected by the power of God
in your faith;
a birth to a salvation standing ready
to be revealed at the end of time.
This is cause for great rejoicing,
even though you suffer now a little
while,
so your faith may prove worthy of all
praise and glory
on that day when Jesus Christ
appears.
Canticle 38 (Tobit 13:110)
Blest be the ever-living God
for his kingdom lasts forever.
He scourges and then he has mercy.
He brings men down to the grave below
and up from the vast abyss.
No one can escape his power.
Praise him, O Israel, before the
nations,
for among them he has scattered you,
and even there he has shown you his
greatness.
Exalt him before every living
creature,
for he is the Lord our God,
our Father and God forever.
He punished you for your wickedness,
but he will again have mercy upon
you.
He will gather you from wherever you
have been
scattered among the nations.
When you turn back to him to obey him
with all
your heart,
then he will turn back to you
and no longer will he hide his face
from you.
Consider now what he has done for you
and praise him with a full voice.
Praise the righteous Lord, exalt the
King of ages.
Your sanctuary will be rebuilt for
you with rejoicing.
May he gladden all your exiles and
your descendants
for ever!
Canticle 39 (Revelation 15:24)
I saw what seemed a sea of glass
shot through with fire,
and by the sea were those with harps
that God had given them,
those who had won the victory
in the battle with the beast.
They were singing the song of Moses,
the servant of God.
"Mighty and marvelous are your
works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are your ways,
O King of all the ages!
Who would dare refuse to honor you
or give you the glory due your name?
For only you are holy, Lord God!
All nations shall come and worship
in your presence,
for all your mighty deeds now stand
revealed."
Canticle 40 (Tobit 13:10 . . . )
Your sanctuary shall be rebuilt for
you with
rejoicing.
Your light will shine brightly to
earth's remotest
ends.
Many nations will come to you from
far away.
In their hands they will bear gifts
for the King of
heaven.
Endless generations will sing their
joy in you.
The name of the holy city will be
everlasting.
Come then, be joyful over the
children of the just,
for they will praise the everlasting
Lord.
Happy those who love you,
who rejoice in your prosperity.
Happy all who grieve for you in your
afflictions.
They will rejoice in you and behold
your joy forever.
Praise, my soul, the Lord, the great
King!
Jerusalem will have her streets
inlaid with precious gems.
Her gates will sing with songs of joy
and all her houses say:
"Blest be the God of
Israel!"
Blest by him, they will praise his
holy name forever. |
